High Falls Park

One of my favorite things about Huntsville is its proximity to many other uniquely beautiful areas of nature. Huntsville is an easy drive to some well-known hopping places such as Nashville, Chattanooga, and Georgia. Locals can make day trips to some fantastic surrounding areas. One of my favorite day trips is to High Falls.

High Falls Park is the most beautiful waterfall located in Grove Oak, AL, approximately 22 miles south of Lake Guntersville. This makes it the perfect day trip to experience.

The waterfall is 35 ft tall and spans over 300 ft depending on the weather. Upon arrival, make your way to the general store to sign in. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The top of the waterfall is a short walk (.2 miles) from there. Visitors can choose to walk directly to the top of the waterfall, which offers the most amazing view. At the top of the waterfall, there are often people wading in Town Creek and even jumping off the waterfall.

Pedestrians can cross the bridge to reach the other side, providing another location to enjoy the swimming hole. The trail that leads down to the bottom front view is also on the other side of bridge.

he hike to the bottom is intense! It’s a narrow, rocky pathway with a steep descent. Sturdy water/hiking shoes are strongly advised. The challenging hike is not recommended for small children. Although my two kids, ages 6 and 9, were able to complete it, we kept a close watch on them. During my recent descent, I slipped, leading to the dropping of my bag and the breaking of one sandal. Fortunately, a roped section is available to aid you along the path as you make your way down. Upon reaching the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the waterfall. Furthermore, there are lower jumping points in this area and a sandy beach to enjoy.

The park also provides a small playground, picnic areas, and clean restrooms.
